M. Morgan Filyaw

Filmmaker & Photographer

Self-reflect • Experiment • Connect

Since I first picked up a camera, these have been my goals as a director and photographer. Everything I make starts with my own experiences, thoughts, or emotions as their foundation. As a filmmaker, my work often engages with themes of human existence and psychology, mental health, womanhood, and sexuality. As a photographer, I enjoy examining the relationship between human beings, man-made objects/structures, and nature.

When working on a piece, I always try to do at least one thing I’ve never done before. I particularly enjoy experimenting with narrative structure and genre conventions, and find that the horror genre has a strong influence on my films. In my photography, I try to experiment with different subjects and challenge myself to find beauty and emotion in all manners of things.

Most importantly, my goal as a director and photographer is to connect. To tell stories that people can relate to, even if they do not share my experiences.

In May of 2020 I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Radio-Television-Film. In my time at UT, I directed six short films, one of which (Pale Blue) played at the 11th Annual Texas Union Film Festival. Most recently, over the summer of 2021, I wrote and directed an experimental horror short titled "Rib Cage." It is now in post-production with me as its editor.

My path as an artist started at a very young age: I began practicing photography and short-form filmmaking when I was 11 years old and became more seriously involved with photography at 16. Up until college, my focus stayed on photography, but after joining the RTF program, my passion for filmmaking was reignited. Because of my photography experience, I would consider myself to be a very visual director, and, as of now, have shot all but two of my films myself.
